GOLD COAST, Australia—A pastor attending a Shen Yun performance described the show as “unbelievable” and “seriously enchanting,” praising its artistic precision, storytelling, and spiritual depth.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it—the costumes, dances, precision of the movement, storylines. They were intriguing,” said Zella Taylor-Watts, the pastor of Spirit Life, about the performance on March 15 at Home of the Arts, Gold Coast.

“As a pastor, I loved the emphasis on the divine and eternity. I have a real heart for eternity, and I appreciate the value of not being able to take what you have here on earth into eternity.”

When asked about the show’s underlying message, the pastor reflected on the theme of good prevailing over evil. “That would probably be the underlying message for me. It was lovely to see that the good prevailed. In each story that was told, there was always a saviour, and evil came to the end of itself. I love that,” she said.

Exploring Spiritual Themes

Ms. Taylor-Watts felt Shen Yun truly lived up to its name—“the beauty of divine beings dancing.”
“There is an element of divinity in all of us as created beings. I can understand why they call it that,” she said, adding that art and creativity can be deeply spiritual experiences. “I think you can connect with anything creative because our God is creative. He’s the creator of us, and we’re creative beings.”

Cultural Significance and Artistic Excellence

Beyond its spiritual themes, Shen Yun aims to revive and celebrate traditional Chinese culture before communism.

The show, however, is currently banned by China’s ruling regime from performing in China. The pastor found this aspect particularly striking.

“I find it very sad that China doesn’t celebrate them, but I’m glad we have the benefit of being able to witness this performance. It’s been amazing,” she said.

If given the chance, Ms. Taylor-Watts would like to honour the artists for their dedication.

“The discipline, the diligence, the determination to succeed—the willingness to go on a journey. They didn’t get here overnight, but they’ve been on a huge journey to reach this level,” she said.

“Their performance has been delightful to watch. The colours, the movement, the precision—it was incredible.”
