NEW YORK CITY—Psychiatrist Claus von Schorn had a wonderful time at Shen Yun Performing Arts, feeling the artists radiated positive energy that could be felt in the audience.

“Oh, how can you not [feel the energy]? With the inspiration of the divine and the beauty. It was just magnificent. I really enjoyed it. It warms your heart and it just inspires you,” Mr. von Schorn said at Lincoln Center on April 12.

Like many New Yorkers, he had been curious about Shen Yun for years, seeing advertisements around town for the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company every year.

“And this year I said I have to come see it. And it’s just amazing. The dancing, the choreography, the music, the costumes, and the dancers. I don’t know how they do that, but it’s wonderful,” he said. “It was fabulous. It was wonderful.”

New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006 with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, or “China before communism.”
Traditional Chinese culture is a divinely inspired culture, and Mr. von Schorn felt that innate spirituality was what made the performance so inspiring.

“The spirituality—something that we need more of today because we’ve forgotten a lot about that in the world today. That was so inspiring and so uplifting,” he said. “In our world today, there’s so much negativity and evil and corruption and sadness. And it’s nice to see things that are uplifting and spiritual.

“We need more of that in our lives in our world, and it’s nice to see something like this that reminds us of it ... [It’s] very inspirational, very important. And it makes you feel good.”

Mr. von Schorn said the stories Shen Yun told through music and dance were lovely, and “just makes you happy and feel good and gives you warmth and energy, and hope for the future.”
