NEW YORK—Andrea Kochanowsky brought her mom and sister to experience Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, Jan. 17.
“I loved it. It was so dynamic, and full of action, full of life. I loved it!” said Ms. Kochanowsky, owner of aok events. Based in New York, aok has planned events for BNY Mellon, Citigroup, IMG, JP Morgan Partners, Microsoft, Tiffany & Co., and many other companies.
Ms. Kochanowsky said the the colors, the expressions, and the movement, all contributed to the life of Shen Yun’s performance.
Shen Yun features “the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops,” according to the company’s website.
Classical Chinese dance is helping preserve 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive that culture—a which was passed down “in imperial courts, and through ancient plays” and refined over thousands of years, Shen Yun’s website says.
Anna Lewicky, a finance consultant, agreed with her sister that Shen Yun was “very dynamic, very energizing.” She also found the different stages of Chinese cultural history, which she referred to as “epochs,” to be “very different and unique.”
Shen Yun performances include mini-drama dance pieces that draw on stories and legends spanning China’s history.
Ms. Lewicky said she learned more about deities and different religious influences. According to a backgrounder on the Shen Yun website, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are the “essence of traditional Chinese culture.”
“I was educated and I wanted to learn more,” said Ms. Lewicky.
Ms. Kochanowsky’s mother, Martha Lewicky, commented on the controlled smoothness of the dance movements amid the “energy, all the steps, the precision, the motion.”
“The colors were fantastic,” she added. “It was very enjoyable.”
