NEW YORK CITY—Financial adviser David Dauria said Shen Yun Performing Arts was an experience he would “totally recommend.”

“I think it was absolutely wonderful. Exceeded expectations beyond belief,” Mr. Dauria said at Lincoln Center on April 12. “It was actually unbelievable.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“Just the whole creativity, I think the entire ensemble was just wonderful, and the singing was beautiful,” Mr. Dauria said, referring to the bel canto soloist who sang an original song in the Chinese language, with translated lyrics projected on the backdrop. The message Mr. Dauria gleaned was spiritual and a pleasant surprise, he said.

“Excellent choreography, singing, and wonderful, beautiful message,” he said.

Also in the audience for Shen Yun’s penultimate performance in New York City this season was O'Nel Mulet, a musician and filmmaker, who found Shen Yun “very inspiring and very moving.”

“I love this show, it’s very beautiful and it’s very entertaining,” Mr. Mulet said. “It’s very exciting, I love the costumes, I love the dance, I love the tradition, it’s very exciting to watch, very engaging.”
The music caught the composer’s attention, as Shen Yun’s orchestra is unique for its East-West blend, with ancient Chinese instruments like the erhu and pipa nestled between classical strings like the violin and cello.
“Oh, the music is wonderful, I love the music, I love the blend of traditional and Western music and the balance that [Shen Yun has] achieved,“ he said. ”I definitely recommend the show; it’s a beautiful example of Chinese culture meets modern production values.”

Dexton Mackenzie Stone, music producer, also enjoyed the music, saying it gave him a sense of peace and tranquility.

“For the mind, it’s very serene. It keeps you calm, peaceful, and it makes you think deep,” Mr. Stone said, adding that the stories Shen Yun told through dance and its innovative digital backdrop were similarly moving and thought-provoking.

“It was excellent. That’s what I was paying attention to. The storytelling is excellent. I watched everything and watched the screen and the storytelling,” he said. “It was beautiful.”

He said he wanted to tell others “to go see it because it is deep.”

“It tells you a lot about what you know of and what you never knew,” he said.
