Shen Yun Performing Arts, a prestigious classical Chinese dance and music company based in New York, will present a brand new stage drama—“The Monkey King”—this spring in the capital of Mexico.

Based on the traditional novel “Journey to the West,” the 90-minute performance will appear at the Centro Cultural (antes Telmex) in Mexico City from May 8 to 17, according to the official website of Shen Yun.

“Journey to the West” is a traditional Chinese epic written in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty. The story tells of a Tang Dynasty-era (618–907) Buddhist monk who travels from China to India to retrieve sacred scriptures.

Accompanying and protecting the monk on his dangerous journey are three disciples: Pigsy, a man-pig who can fly; Sandy, an ogre who turns into a giant fish; and the magical Monkey King, the most powerful of them all, though he also has quite the mischievous streak. The four face demons and obstacles on their path to the western lands.

Episodes from “Journey to the West” have appeared as individual dances in Shen Yun’s performances over the years. Humorous and action-packed, these have proven popular with audience members of all ages.

Founded in 2006, Shen Yun tours the globe each year, performing in North and South America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia, working, the company’s website says, to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

Shen Yun’s performances feature classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dances, digital animated backdrops, a live orchestra that combines Chinese and Western instruments, and brilliant, ancient costumes.
