NEW YORK—Shen Yun Performing Arts is back in New York City’s Lincoln Center for 13 shows, most already sold out, with two performances recently added.
In the audience, on the second evening, was Richard Ravitch, former Lieutenant Governor of New York, who attended the performance with family members on April 7.
“I’m enjoying it. My grandson and his girlfriend are sitting on the front row—they’re loving it. My son is loving it,” he said.
“The dancing and the music are extraordinary,“ he said. ”It’s a very romantic feel.”
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company and has been credited with the revival of this ancient art form.
Eileen and Tom Kossmann, too, were taken by the level of the dancers.
“Everything is like powerful, like pounding in my chest, and the way they dance, all synchronized so together, is amazing. It’s just awesome. It’s amazing,” said Mrs. Kossman, who works in administration for a school district.
The choreography was so impressive, “I sometimes think I’m seeing double [the number of people],” said Mr. Kossman, CFO of an electronics corporation.
Mr. Kossman had surprised his wife with tickets, and “honestly, it’s mind-boggling, I love it, it’s beautiful,” Mrs. Kossman said.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “All of the stories. It’s amazing. It’s just amazing how they portray it in their dance and the way they do things.”
Jeffrey Norwood, a business owner and musicologist, enjoyed being close to the orchestra pit. In addition to classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun is also noted for its unique orchestra, which combined ancient Chinese instruments as permanent members of the classical ensemble.
“The added flavor of the Chinese instruments that are being used just adds a whole new color to it all,” he said. “This is a true mix. It’s wonderfully, it’s classically Chinese.”
“It’s marvelous,“ Mr. Norwood said. ”It’s really, really wonderful—very enjoyable and full of variety.”
