TORONTO—Watching Shen Yun Performing Arts with its striking array of colours, handmade costumes, and the superb dance skills of its performers created a memorable experience for model and PR professional Stephanie Chong.

“I thought it was beautiful. I loved all the colours, I liked how everything just flowed perfectly,” said Ms. Chong, the chair of public relations at the United Nations Association in Canada.

Drawing on her experience as a fashion model and writer, she commended the beautifully designed costumes in the show, which Shen Yun’s costume artists prepare with meticulous attention to every detail.

“With the bright colours, the flowing fabrics—it was just beautiful, fluid,” she said. “I loved how everything was so vibrant and so bright and eye-catching.”

The skills of the dancers—who performed the challenging leaps, tumbles, and spins in classical Chinese dance with great mastery, while also seeming to sometimes float on the stage—also impressed Ms. Chong.

“They looked like they were flying, as if they weren’t touching the ground, just flying on the stage,” she said.

“They’re very graceful. Even when they’re on the floor it doesn’t seem like they’re on the floor.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun aims to revive China’s divinely inspired culture, a culture that was almost lost after decades of communist rule in China through campaigns such as the Cultural Revolution.

Ms. Chong, who is of Chinese ethnicity, said it’s important keep China’s traditional culture alive.

“I think a good way of never losing that culture is to keep having these sorts of performances and keeping the awareness alive that our culture is strong and our culture is rich and there is so much behind it and that it’s something that people should never forget about,” she said.

She also appreciated seeing dance scenes set in modern-day China that show some of the suppressions perpetrated by the regime—particularly that of the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline with roots in ancient China.

“I think it’s great that Shen Yun highlighted this human rights issue. ... I think it’s great that they’re addressing this issue.”
