WASHINGTON—Frank Lane was intrigued by Shen Yun Performing Arts’ mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization on stage, and what he saw at the Kennedy Center on Feb. 21 did not disappoint.
“Beautiful, beautiful. The choreography that goes into the presentations is amazing,” said Mr. Lane, who is now retired from a career in the Department of Defense, State Department, and National Security Council.
The communist regime, he said, has only been there for, what, 76 years out of a 5,000-year history, and hopefully that’s just a small blip.”
“I was thinking that maybe it shows a bright light that someday maybe China will open its doors and not be so restrictive and not be so scared of its own people and their past,” Mr. Lane said. “I don’t know if they can bring themselves to do it, but I think they'd be a better country for it.”
Mr. Lane said Shen Yun’s mission was “a great idea because it shouldn’t get lost” just because of that blip in history.
“Do you realize what percent of like 85 years is of 5,000?” he said.
