Shen Yun Performing Arts will visit Waterbury, Connecticut, for a performance at the Palace Theater on Dec. 28.

The New York-based performing arts company has become popular the world over since its inception in 2006, and Waterbury audiences are no exception. Last season, theatergoers attending Shen Yun in Waterbury were wowed.

The culture Shen Yun brings to the world stage is said to be divinely inspired. Under the communist regime, the traditional beliefs and values present in the art have been oppressed, and thus Shen Yun has not been able to perform in China.

According to Dr. Gerard Brooker, what Shen Yun is doing is positive. He said he felt the spirituality of the culture coming through the performance.

“It’s respect for each other. It’s reflective of their common humanity, their respect for each other, and love of the land. It all comes through in a great touch of natural spirituality,” he said. “It’s very uplifting.”

Beautiful Dance

A perfectly executed backward flip, a graceful kick, and extension of the leg—many dance movements in classical Chinese dance evoke a sense of the martial arts, though they also seem clearly different.

Joel White, a police officer and owner of a karate school, the artistry was particularly enjoyable. He marveled at the incredible precision and dedication to the craft of Shen Yun Performing Arts’s dancers.

Micaela Orpheus, an English teacher who had also trained in dance, said, “It was just stunning. When I watched an individual person, they were perfect, and when I pulled back and watched the whole thing, it was masterful.”

“So to me that spoke of the culture in that there was such dedication to their craft that I was really impressed with it,” she said.

Classical Chinese dance is at the center of every Shen Yun performance. The dancers perform each theatrical piece with rich emotion, steeped in traditional culture.

This complete dance system was passed down over thousands of years, so many cultural traditions are expressed through the movements and postures.

Laura Albee and her daughter Taylor Albee appreciated how self-expression through dance can connect the mind, body, and soul. Laura Albee felt traditional Chinese culture brought a sense of peace and serenity.

“It’s like watching the timeline of ancient culture through the past and how it evolves,” Laura Albee said.
