PHOENIX—Carl Erickson had crossed state lines to attend a performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts, and had an amazing experience.

“We actually flew down from Nevada to see this,” said Mr. Erickson, CEO of a consulting company, at Symphony Hall on March 8. “Technology was fabulous. The choreography was amazing.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s leading classical Chinese dance company—but cannot perform in China.

Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization in its mission to show audiences “China before communism.”

“It changes your perspective on China. It really does,” Mr. Erickson said.

He added his support for Shen Yun’s mission.

“I think it’s great. I think maintaining the cultural aspects of hundreds of centuries is absolutely fabulous. There’s a lot of countries that can learn from that,” he said.

Guy Passe, attending the performance on March 8, also found Shen Yun to be “eye-opening.”

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Mr. Passe, a consultant. He found it a shame that Shen Yun could not perform in China under communist rule, but added that it was such “a blessing to us because, I mean, it’s beautiful.”
He said the talent of the performers and the innovative production was “remarkable,” and expressed his gratitude to the artists for continuing on their mission.

“I just want to thank them very much because it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing,” he said. “And I’m amazed that they can do it. And they should keep doing it. I mean, the world needs to see it.”
