MILWAUKEE—Michael Albert, a retired construction engineer, and Aruna Lal, a nursing professor, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Miller High Life Theatre on Feb. 22. Mr. Albert and Ms. Lal had watched Shen Yun once before, and they enjoyed the performance so much they decided to see it again.
“[It’s] fantastic, we love it,” Ms. Lal said. “The choreography is just phenomenal.”
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun’s mission has been to revive traditional Chinese culture and show audiences the beauty of “China before communism.”
Shen Yun’s performance depicts the spiritual elements of traditional Chinese culture, which is deeply rooted in the teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Ms. Lal felt that these elements “[bring] the world together as humanity.”
“I think it’s nice to understand where every human being comes from, but yet we are all humans,” she said.
Ms. Lal resonated with the lyrics to the songs in Shen Yun’s program because they captured “the connection between the divine and humanity.”
“We are all divine, a we [will] all go to one place regardless of who we are,” she said. “The world is really in pain right now, and it’s really nice to bring people together.”
Shen Yun performs an all-new program every year, and Ms. Lal appreciated that she was able to see something different from the first time she watched the performance. She also expressed her gratitude for Shen Yun’s performers and their efforts to showcase traditional Chinese culture to the world.
“Thank you for bringing your culture to ours, for [letting us] learn and see what the other parts of the world are like ... and the ancient way of doing things.”
