CHEYENNE, Wyo—Company owner David Matula was deeply impressed by Shen Yun Performing Arts when he attended the company’s first show at the Cheyenne Civic Center on March 25.

“We’re so glad we came,” he said, “It’s absolutely phenomenal. The bright colors, the art, the elegance of the dance—very well put together. We will watch for it to come again, and we will be back. It’s nice learning a little bit about the culture.”

According to its website, the name ‘Shen Yun” translates directly into “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Based in New York, the artists have made it their mission to revive, through dance and music, China’s divinely inspired civilization to its pre-communist glory.

The performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the company tells tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Reflecting on Shen Yun’s mission to revive traditional culture and raise awareness of the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of people of faith in China, Mr. Matula said that it was beautifully done.

He loved the depiction of the Creator descending to earth to help people in times of need.

“This is beautiful. It brings back hope for those. I think that’s a good way to put it. Pretty blessed,” he shared.

“We all have our own views and points that we live by through our heart, and watching this show. You perceive what true love [can do] and like the one that was suppressed—by believing and having the belief [the Creator will] come back and save you.”

Mr. Matula commented that watching shows like Shen Yun “always inspires a person’s heart and makes people believe that there is hope no matter what can happen, because we all go through tragedy in our own ways.”

“Watching this makes us believe also that no matter where we’re at, we can have our hearts set free and be able to become what we want to be,” he added. “Belief is a very powerful thing.”

He would love to bring his granddaughter to see a performance next time.

“It’s just all very elegant and so well put together, so precise. It’s just beautiful to watch. My granddaughter is a dancer, and that’s why I’m looking forward to next time to be able to bring her. … Watching this would be inspiring for her in many ways.”

Mr. Matula would be telling friends and family “to come and visit and see a show.”

“It’s worth the travel. We’re only three hours away, but it’s very beautiful and I would suggest everybody to get to see it,” he stated.

“It’s something we don’t see all the time. So, it’s very inspiring. It brings a different light from a different area. I think it’s fabulous that they bring this culture to us out here.”
