Shen Yun Performing Arts will be returning to upstate New York with a pair of performances in Syracuse at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater on Jan. 29–30 and in Rochester at the Rochester Auditorium Theatre on Feb. 6–7.

It’s been nearly three years since the New York-based company, which has been wowing audiences all over the world with its stunning beauty and energy, has visited the Syracuse area. But with a beautiful campus and numerous eateries to boast, Syracuse makes for a great place to host such a world-class performance.

And when hit performance last visited, it was met with rave reviews.

“I feel like a new person,” said Carol Smith, former deputy commissioner of corrections, after seeing Shen Yun on May 12, 2013 in Syracuse.

“I felt as if I was seeing a new world that I had never experienced before,” she said. “This just opens up your eyes to another culture, and you’re learning their culture as well as enjoying their dance. It’s a wonderful combination.”

According to its website, Shen Yun takes you through a journey of 5,000 years of rich Chinese culture—a culture that has been nearly wiped away by the Chinese Communist Party. So, ironically, the only place on earth that you can’t see such a performance is in China itself, where for the last 60-some years traditional culture has been mostly eradicated.

But China was once known as the Divine Land and Shen Yun shows audiences why.

Through music and dance, the performance gives viewers an experience of those heroic tales and what being around those heavenly realms and ancient legends was like. The dancers are accompanied by an orchestra that blends Eastern and Western music together and a creative digital backdrop that makes for a top-notch performance.

The main experience is the dancing—classical Chinese dance—which is what Shen Yun is known for. With its flips, spins, and leaps, each story is told through the elegant and gentle—yet richly expressive dance movements. Meanwhile, the orchestra combines the beauty of Chinese music with the power of a Western orchestra to produce one grand sound.
