DENVER—Claire and Michael DeGroot loved Shen Yun Performing Arts so much the first time they saw it that they returned to bring Sandra DeGroot to see it for her birthday.

“This is the best present I have ever had in my life. I absolutely loved it. Just amazing. And it was over so quickly, even though it was almost two and a half hours—it was beautiful. Really appreciated their talent,” said Ms. Sandra DeGroot after seeing Shen Yun at The Buell Theatre on April 5.

“It is spiritual and graceful and, I mean, just wonderful,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.
Mr. DeGroot is a musician, and said he especially appreciated the orchestra.

“It was spectacular,” he said, describing how the instruments were set up and how the orchestra perfectly matched the dancing. “It’s just phenomenal, very beautiful ... just phenomenal. All the percussion, gong, strings, bass—yeah, it’s just amazing. They’re so good.”

The Shen Yun orchestra is unique in that it is the only classical orchestra in the world to permanently incorporate ancient Chinese instruments into the ensemble. One such instrument was the two-stringed erhu, which was featured in a solo when the erhu virtuoso stepped out on stage.

“She’s an amazing player. To watch her play the two strings is just—it’s a treat,” Mr. DeGroot said.

Mr. DeGroot said Shen Yun delivered a positive and much-needed message of “kindness.”

“I think that the world needs this message right now, of just basically hope and being kind to each other,” he said.

Mr. DeGroot found the stories were touching, and he took from them the message that “you can overcome with love and being kind over any of the persecution and just choose the right path.”

Ms. Claire DeGroot said that this was their second viewing, but wouldn’t be their last.

“We'll be back,” she said.
