Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most expressive dance forms in the world.
“Numerous things stand out. The first is the synchronization of the dancers. The synchronization is perfect. I mean, every single dancer, every step, every movement, all the way through the entire performance is absolutely perfect,” said Mr. Butts.Shen Yun’s singers are trained in the bel canto style and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung. Mr. Butts’s daughter Emma loved the music.
“I have loved all instruments for forever, but I loved the soprano so much. She did such an amazing job,” she said.“My 11-year-old daughter during the soprano performance—cried the entire song,” her father added.
Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world.
“I loved it. I thought it was such an amazing cultural experience. And I particularly enjoyed how it shows different aspects of the culture, both contemporary and historical,” said Kayla Butts.
Since 2006, Shen Yun has been facing interference from the Chinese Communist Party. Just recently, the company performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington received a bomb threat.“One of the reasons my family is here is simply to support Shen Yun, so it can continue because of the tragedy of the true culture of China not being allowed to flourish in China. The true culture of China only exists outside China. And, because it’s an amazing show,” Mr. Butts shared.
