SALT LAKE CITY—Company founder and CEO Wendy Rogers and her husband Brad, a company VP, fell in love with Shen Yun Performing Arts after attending the company’s evening show at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater on March 21.

“I really enjoyed the performance tonight. Amazing, I highly recommend it. Very, very, very good. I will come back next year,” Mr. Rogers said. He was captivated by every element of the performance.

“I think the performers, the performance, the talent, the message that [they] conveyed—from the singing to the dancing, the plays, the graphics—it was unbelievable. Great. Highly recommend it. It’s a must-see.”

Mr. Rogers believes Shen Yun’s message “is about life” and appreciating “something greater than what we have right here today. It was very well done,” he said.

Founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who fled persecution, the New York-based Shen Yun is dedicated to reviving the beauty and divine virtues of pre-communist China.

Its performance takes the audience through China’s dynasties and legends, while also raising awareness for the ongoing human rights challenges in present-day China.

As someone who has traveled extensively in China, Mrs. Rogers said Shen Yun “really captured the spirit of the people of China.”

“The way that they have an appreciation for beauty and for the inner soul and the sense of faith—all of that in the midst of cultural diversity and challenges—I thought it was really beautifully expressed in all of the story and the graphics and the dance and everything,” she expressed.

Endowed with 5,000 years of history, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine.” For millenniums, its people believed that by keeping their hearts pure and adhering to strict moral standards, they will be blessed by the divine.

However, after the communist takeover and its spread of atheism, all this traditional culture was systematically destroyed. Today, Shen Yun is banned by the ruling regime from performing in China.

If given the chance, Mrs. Rogers would like to tell the performers that “their spirit and inner joy was captured on stage beautifully.”

“The one thing that I’ve always appreciated about the Chinese people is the spirit that they have,” she added. “It’s something that breeds resilience for a lot of the difficult political situations that they’ve gone through.”

This season, Shen Yun’s eight touring companies are bringing their stunning performances to over 200 cities worldwide. With a brand-new program each year, the company’s 19th anniversary marks another season full of fresh surprises for both first-time and returning audiences alike.
