SEATTLE—Company owner Dennis Creson watched Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall on April 4. He was very impressed by how skilled the artists are.

“I’m very impressed with the athletic ability of all the dancers, and how they were synchronized really was really impressive,” he exclaimed. “They are very professional and they do a great job.”

Since its establishment in 2006, the New York-based Shen Yun has earned widespread acclaim. Each year, the artists present a brand-new set of choreography and musical compositions, ensuring that both new and returning audience members are always in for a surprise.

The performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.
Mr. Creson enjoyed all of Shen Yun’s storyline dances, particularly the one featuring the Tang Monk, the magical Monkey King, and Pigsy on their journey across China in search of sacred scriptures—a scene inspired by the classic novel “Journey to the West.”

“It’s humorous and easy to follow,” he said.

In the decades since the communist regime seized power, Chinese culture was forced to the brink of extinction. Shen Yun artists’ mission is to bring back China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture and showcase to the world the beauty of China before communism.

Mr. Creson found traditional Chinese culture very special and expressed his sadness that so much of it has been lost today.

“I’ve been to the East and many countries, but I’ve never been to China. It’s very unique and different and what we see here in the West,” he said.

“I think there should be more freedom of expression … in China, not just what the government allows and doesn’t allow. We learn a lot from other cultures, more than just hearing about them. They should [also] be allowed to experience more traditions from other cultures.”

Lastly, Mr. Creson would like to congratulate the performers “on all the hard work that they’ve done.” He will absolutely be recommending the performance to all his friends and family.

I will tell them Shen Yun is “very colorful and exciting and there’s always something new to see and to experience.”
