NORTHAMPTON, UK—David Barnes had seen Shen Yun Performing Arts in Birmingham a previous season, and thought the experience was so fantastic he had to see it again when he had the chance. On Feb. 18, he had that opportunity at the Royal & Derngate in Northampton and marveled at the all-new production.

“I think it’s brilliant, because, I mean, the culture in China stands out alone from any other. It’s brilliant,” said Mr. Barnes, a consultant who retired from a career of rescuing exotic animals with various charities.

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to share with audiences the beauty of China before communism.
Mr. Barnes said he was impressed with the various aspects of the performance, and that these innovative elements had all been created anew for the 2025 program—such as the brilliantly colored costumes, the backdrop designs and animation, and the original music performed by the full orchestra.

“They were fantastic,” he said of the artists, adding that he had been amazed by their athleticism. “They’re just brilliant. And I love the way the back screen, where they disappeared into the screen and went up into the heavens. It was just amazing. Very, very clever stuff.”

The music that blended East and West had been “so peaceful and beautiful,” especially when it took center stage with a solo performance by the erhu virtuoso.

“It was beautiful, absolutely stunning,” he said. “You looked and thought, how can she make such music out of two strings? And she was good, very good.”

Mr. Barnes said he would make an effort to see Shen Yun next year as well, and recommended others do the same.

“Very, very happy I came,” he said. “I can’t say words anymore to say how good it was. But anyone who hasn’t seen it needs to come out and see it. It’s well worth it.”
