LOS ANGELES—Liza and Gonzalo Martinez, a family physician with his own private practice, described Shen Yun Performing Arts as a wonderful experience that quite literally took their breath away. They attended the matinee show at the Los Angeles Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Jan. 18.

“It was very impressive. It was very breathtaking, said Mrs. Martinez, who is an administrator at her husband’s clinic.

She said the beauty was hard to put into words.

“I can’t explain it. You just have to see it in order to appreciate it. It’s very different from what you see on TV until you see it live.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to show audiences China before communism.

Mr. Martinez was also taken away by the rich experience.

“It was very impressive, very well choreographed, very colorful,” he said.

“Even the way they kind of adapted the screen to real life, it was unusual,” he said. “It’s something I’ve never seen before.”

Shen Yun’s digital backdrops are the first of its kind. Audiences often say the designs complement and synchronize all aspects of the performance: the characters, color of the costumes, specific dance movements, props, lighting, the story being told, particular notes played by the orchestra, and more.
With state-of-the-art graphics technology, Shen Yun’s dancers interact with the backdrop to transport the audience and bring the stories to life.
Mr. Martinez said he appreciated the spiritual aspect of the performance and that it resonated with him deeply.

“Respect, consideration, and getting along, and no criticism,” he said. “Allow people to be themselves, so they'll be able to be free to express their beliefs.”

He also said that the show shed light on the Chinese Communist Party’s suppression of Chinese people.

“And it’s still going on,” he said. “So we support the movement away from communist China.”

Since 2006, New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has embarked on a mission: “to revive a culture that was almost lost” and “share it with the world,” the company’s website states.

It further states, “Over the past decades, the Chinese Communist Party has treated traditional culture as a threat to its rule. Through campaigns like the Cultural Revolution, it has systematically uprooted traditional beliefs and destroyed ancient treasures, bringing 5,000 years of civilization to the brink of extinction.”

Mr. Martinez said it was a wonderful experience.

“The music was excellent. The dancers were very athletic, it’s amazing … And the music, everything was wonderful.”
