COSTA MESA, Calif.—The audience loved the performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California, on March 16. John and Mary Beth Stevenson enjoyed the whole experience sitting near the stage.

Mrs. Stevenson, a corporate trainer, said, “It’s amazing. There’s no words for it. [Shen Yun] is just all about the grace, and the delicacy, the movement, and their faces. We’re close enough to see their faces and their expressions. And they’re gorgeous. They’re beautiful.”

The music transported her into a wonderful dream-like world, she said. “The music is amazing. When you’re in there, it’s almost like you’re in an hour-long daydream, like a little fantasy. It’s beautiful the way they move.”

Mrs. Stevenson said she didn’t realize how life-changing watching Shen Yun might be. “I didn’t expect that. I wasn’t really sure what people meant when they said, ‘life-changing experience.’ Because I’m thinking: How are we going to know all that from just watching the show? But you do. They speak. That’s really cool that they do that.”

“We take a lot for granted here. It still matters [even if] it’s all so long ago, that it still matters,” she said.

Shen Yun Presents a Beautiful Reality

David and Shelly Quinn were happy to see Shen Yun’s special qualities. Mr. Quinn, a health care provider, said, “I’ve been waiting for quite some time to see this event. I’m glad to be here.”
With shows scheduled in over 200 cities and across five continents, the 2024 touring season is shaping up to be the artists’ busiest yet.

“I’m enjoying it. It’s very well executed. I just like the way it all blends in together. The storyline becomes easier to pick up,” he said.

Mrs. Quinn, who manages commercial accounts for a company, said, “What I think is special is, like they said, China is still very different. Very different for people. It was beautiful, the divine part of it, trying to have it be that way again someday would be really nice.”

She said she got a spiritual feeling from the show. “Oh, I love [the spiritual aspect]. Just the part where they talk about salvation, and then [negative entities] block you, the negative part what we see, what we hear blocking our minds. Or maybe what we grew up with, and we still think, so ignore it.”
Mrs. Quinn liked the Mongolian dance and the story about the mother and daughter. The Stevensons bought a book about Falun Dafa, which could help to understand the persecution happening in China right now. “We have one,” said Mr. Quinn. “We did purchase one.”

“What’s cool is this is quite a historical event that’s being played out. I mean, thousands of years. This culture is well embedded. That’s what’s neat to see that resonates throughout the performance,” he said.

“I’ve been studying China, actually. Yes, I have. I’ve been watching some documentaries, quite a few on the country and all the diversity, and it’s gorgeous. It really is. It’s a huge, huge place, and there’s several different cultures there. So it’s intriguing,” he said.

Through classical Chinese dance and music, Shen Yun is sharing with the world the beauty of China’s authentic 5,000 years of history. Since its founding in 2006, the company has received worldwide accolades for its mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.

Mr. Quinn expressed encouragement to the performers. “I’m very grateful to be here. Congratulations on being so proficient.”

Mrs. Quinn agreed with her husband’s sentiments. “Blessings to them that they’re able to be here, be a part of the United States, and just grow, and do everything they want to do, other than being in China.”

Shen Yun encouraged Mr. Quinn to take action. “I’m in the process of changing people’s minds, because when we change the mind, which they have demonstrated in the show, we will change this reality that we’re currently in to promote life options,” he said.
