SAN FRANCISCO—Mark Lyon, winemaker of Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery, said he had been so impressed with Shen Yun Performing Arts last year he wanted to bring friends to see it again at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, Jan. 12.

Looking over the biographies of the Shen Yun artists in the program book, Mr. Lyon said he was thinking over what an experience Shen Yun had been this year as well.

“I love the show so far,” said Mr. Lyon during intermission.

Named Winemaker of the Year by Restaurant Wine Magazine, Mr. Lyon has been Sebastiani’s winemaker for over 30 years and awarded many times throughout his career.

“We brought friends of ours to the show; it’s their first time,” Mr. Lyon said. The group had been impressed with the dancing, costumes, and beauty of the performers, he added.

Also in the audience was Ms. Parris Lane, a college student, who had wanted to see Shen Yun for years and finally came the very morning of the last performance to buy her ticket.

“This is awesome, totally awesome,” Ms. Lane said.

Ms. Lane said the performance was entertaining and had included comedy as well, but she had learned a lot about the history of China’s 5,000 years at the same time.

Ms. Lane listed dances that told the background of Tai Chi, Mongolian customs, the dress of Manchurian princesses, and more.

Ms. Lane noted the use of Shen Yun’s digital backdrop as well, which allowed the dancers to seemingly jump out from the animated backdrop onto the stage.

“That was amazing because it was so precise,” Ms. Lane said. “It was really, really good.”
