Scientist Says Shen Yun ’Absolutely Fantastic’

LOS ANGELES—Scientist Pam Powers watched Shen Yun Performing Arts for the second time on Jan. 18 at Los Angeles’ Chandler Pavilion, and her impression was the same as the first time she saw the performance 10 years ago. Once again, she loved it, saying the performance could open peoples’ eyes to a different, vibrant culture.

“I love the fact that they have new stories,” she said of this year’s season of Shen Yun. Ms. Powers also highlighted the performance’s cultural dances, which she had not seen before.

“I just think the dancers and the singers and the musicians and everyone are amazing, and I’m happy to come to support it and watch it anytime possible,” said Ms. Powers, who is very enthusiastic about Shen Yun’s mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.

Indeed, New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has since 2006 had a very particular mission: “to revive a culture that was almost lost” and “share it with the world.” Its mission is particularly poignant in light of recent history.

“Over the past decades, the Chinese Communist Party has treated traditional culture as a threat to its rule,” reads the Shen Yun website. “Through campaigns like the Cultural Revolution, it has systematically uprooted traditional beliefs and destroyed ancient treasures, bringing 5,000 years of civilization to the brink of extinction.”

Ms. Powers finds this mission fabulous.

“Absolutely fantastic,” said Ms. Powers. “We need a lot more than that, for more than just Chinese.”

Ms. Powers thought the stories were well-told. “They can convey so much from dance alone and not words,” she said.
