ROME—Francesca Manzini, a famous Italian comedian, impersonator, radio and TV presenter, and Matteo Angioli, Secretary General of the Global Commission for the Rule of Law’s “Marco Pannella” attended Shen Yun Performing Arts together at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and they shared their thoughts on the performance.

“We saw the show last year. It’s always healthy to engage in these dips into Chinese culture through Shen Yun. You can feel the meritorious quest for peace and justice against despots,” Mr. Angiolo shared.

Shen Yun is based in New York and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“[Shen Yun] coming to Italy helped us grasp their culture. Unfortunately, they are still under a dictatorship that does not make them free. Kudos to them. We saw lightness and pain and also some fun and culture,” Ms. Manzini said.

China was once known as the land of the divine. Shen Yun is dedicated to letting audiences around the world see what China was before communism.

“It is a show worth seeing because it proposes a sense of justice and reconnection with one’s self in harmony with nature and one’s neighbor,” Mr. Angiolo said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. But aside from classical Chinese dance, the artists are also experts in various ethnic and folk dances from the different regions in China.

Mr. Angiolo took note of “the reference to the Tibetan tradition [spiritual] that unites the great ethnic groups that are part of [China] which is unfortunately subjugated. Somehow it gives you inspiration, it connects you with the best part of you.”
Classical Chinese dance is as demanding on the artist as the most strenuous of sports.

“Hire us,” Ms. Manzini joked.

“I would lose weight. As a discipline they are unique. They are always light and focused. I don’t know how they can be so flexible,” she continued.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

Mr. Angiolo shared that he appreciated, “The graphics, the interaction with the background, the way they go in and out in these lost worlds.”
