MESA, Ariz.—First impressions are important, and first-time audience members of Shen Yun Performing Arts are often struck by the colors, beauty, and athleticism of the performance.

“I liked it very much. Very colorful. Very athletic. I like the gymnastics, and I like the athleticism, the colors, the music. It was all wonderful,” said Jeffrey Sharp, a retired board-certified family physician.

He shared that this was his first time seeing a performance like Shen Yun.
Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most expressive dance systems in the world.

“I really was focusing on the hands. I thought that the hands were very expressive, and I liked watching those up close. And of course, I was looking at some of the details of the costumes, the feet, the faces. It just was a remarkable performance and I enjoyed it all,” Mr. Sharp said.

China was once known as the land of the divine but that reverence of divinity was quashed when the Chinese Communist Party came into power. Shen Yun’s performance is a reminder to the audience of what China was before communism.

“I think it’s a faith-assuring performance. It really is remarkable in terms of how it expresses the faith of the people overcoming their difficulties and counteracting the communist regime,” Mr. Sharp remarked.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“I liked it a lot. I was really surprised at the way that backdrop interacts with the live performers. It’s just a really remarkable kind of presentation,” Mr. Sharp said.

Mr. Sharp shared that he'd encourage his family to see Shen Yun, especially those who are experienced with dance and music.

“I’m going to share this with many members of my family. Those that are experienced in dance, in music, in martial arts, in gymnastics. I’m just going to share that with a lot of my family. I have a big family, and I’m going to share it with them,” he said.
