OMAHA, Neb.—Some people take their freedom for granted while others abuse their freedom. However, for the people of China, freedom is something to hope for.

“I’m for freedom. I’m against communism. And I would love to see China free,” said Doug Einung, a real estate investor, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Orpheum Theater.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Although the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has only been in power for less than a century out of the 5,000 years, it has managed to distort and destroy a huge part of Chinese history and culture.
Regarding Shen Yun’s mission, Mr. Einung said, “Keep it alive because China’s been around for thousands of years, so it’s awesome that they keep that going.”

Having visited China, Mr. Einung is familiar with the oppression of the CCP. His student guide, while he visited, always avoided being seen by the local police because he didn’t want to be seen with Americans.

“The message I get is that these people love freedom and wish their country was free. And I’m all for freedom also. I’m worried about our country losing its freedom—losing my freedom here,” he shared.

Mr. Einung has been to four or five Shen Yun performances. Each season Shen Yun puts on an all new production, and he has tried to attend every season.

“I come every time [Shen Yun] comes to Omaha, I try not to miss it,” he said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most athletic and challenging dance systems.

“I come because they’re so excellent. They’re skilled. I mean, you can see the practice they put into it, the work, the precision. It’s amazing. I can’t do that. I could never. It’s a joy to see such excellence,” stated Mr. Einung.

Classical Chinese dance is amazingly expressive and can be used to tell vivid stories. From the palace halls of different dynasties to the celebrations for a bountiful harvest, props and costumes are a large part of the vivid imagery.

“The long sleeves. That is amazing. And how they have that long sleeve out there, and then they bring it back into their hand. How do you do that? It’s amazing. And they all do it together, and nobody messes up,” he remarked.

The artists and musicians rehearse tirelessly to bring their best to the audience. The best means a flawless performance every time.

“There’s 12 or 13 out there, and I haven’t seen one of them make a mistake. How’s that possible?” said Mr. Einung.
