RALEIGH, N.C.—Christy Humphrey, a social worker, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Memorial Auditorium at Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 18. Ms. Humphrey shared that before going to the theater, she had heard friends talking about Shen Yun, but when she actually saw the performance in person, all her expectations were exceeded.

“It’s fabulous,” Ms. Humphrey said. “The colors and dancers are beautiful.”

Since its inception in 2006, New York-based Shen Yun has grown from one to eight equally-sized companies that tour the world simultaneously, realizing its mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and show the world what China was like before communism through classical Chinese dance and music.

Ms. Humphrey said that she found Shen Yun’s mission very interesting, as it has allowed her to see China in a different light.

“In my lifetime, we’ve not known of China before communism,” she said. “So just getting a chance to see what it was like before that is really good.”

“I wish they could go back to China before communism, just because it’s so beautiful. To see the people acting so freely and dancing, and [showing] their talents. I ... wish for that, they could go back to before that time.”

Ms. Humphrey also said that the dancers’ emotions and commitment touched her.

“[Their] emotions while they dance, and they’re so committed to it. Everyone seems so happy and excited.”
