EDINBURGH, UK—Shen Yun performed at the Edinburgh Playhouse to an appreciative audience on Jan. 31. Among them was Julianne Huggins, a psychotherapist, who enjoyed the performance in many ways.
“I’m delighted. It’s delightful. I am enchanted,” Ms. Huggins said.
“[I’m enchanted] by the passion behind the stories and the way that the dancers move. I absolutely love the way they move. It’s unexpected,” she said.
Ms. Huggins said the performance touched her. “I expected the performance to be powerful, strong, evocative, but to see the tenderness behind it was somewhat of a surprise,” she said.
“I think it comes through really well. And I’m particularly drawn to it, actually. I’m drawn to it because it’s a continual struggle for them to express it. And you can feel that in the performance,” she said.
Many audience members have felt a strong, positive energy during performances. Ms. Huggins described it as “authentic, real, coming from their heart. Obviously, a community that doesn’t have a very loud voice but would like to get that heard.”
She commented on how important traditional values are for the modern world. “I particularly like them because I think values, obviously in my work, are incredibly important. They guide us and show us who we are, where we would like to be [in] the future, and also brings a solid foundation in the moment for where we are right now.”
Ms. Huggins had much to take away from Shen Yun. “My key takeaway—the tenderness,” she said.
