AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Author Karen McMillan said that it is important for people to see the values displayed in Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“Values are very important to the contemporary world,” Ms. McMillan said after watching Shen Yun at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Aotea Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, on Feb. 22.

“As a writer, I think performing arts are really important—and for people to value traditions,” she said.

“And this is where arts comes into it … It’s like exploring the human condition and looking beyond just this human world.”

New York-based Shen Yun, the world’s leading classical Chinese dance company, aims to showcase China prior to communism, a time when belief in the divine and the heavens was reflected in ancient Chinese peoples’ morality and culture.

In particular, traditional virtues—such as faith, loyalty, filial piety, morality, and compassion—are displayed through a series of vignettes.

This resonated with Ms. McMillan.

“Whatever nation you come from, like, it’s part of who you are,” she said.

“I think people will enjoy a different element and also to [get] them thinking about faith and things like that,” she said.
“Amazing traditional storytelling. I love that, and I like storytelling through dance.”

Shen Yun Promotes ‘People’s Wellbeing and Safety’: Councilor

Bill Hammond, councillor for the Upper Hutt City Council, said Shen Yun highlights the importance of having freedom of belief—a value that is protected in democratic countries but is oppressed under communism.

Currently, Shen Yun cannot perform in China, since the company’s mission is to revive what the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) sought to systematically destroy—China’s 5,000-year-old culture.

“We live in a country that is very open, and open to everybody’s beliefs, and we don’t tolerate anything like that,” Mr. Hammond said of the CCP’s oppression.

“So the show itself is really, really good, and if it promotes people’s well-being and their safety, well, all power to you.”

Mr. Hammond said it was worth traveling to watch the performance.

“It’s well worth the journey coming up here,“ he said. ”The colors, the professionalism, the dancing, and the whole show is just really, really brilliant.”
