NEW YORK CITY—Donald Gorczynski said Shen Yun Performing Arts was a 10 out of 10, and a great dive into the Chinese culture for audiences who may not know the culture or language.

“I think that having them tour the country and express Chinese culture throughout the United States is very informative, and also I think that it’s very entertaining,” said Mr. Gorzinski, a company manager, after seeing Shen Yun at Lincoln Center on April 9.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company, and is indeed on a tour across the country and around the world with its eight companies

Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“I thought that the translation of dance into the cultural interpretations were very good. Also, the sentiment that was after each performance told a certain story that was also very interpretive and understanding to a general audience that didn’t necessarily understand the language,” Mr. Gorczynski said.

A Shen Yun program includes more than a dozen dance and music vignettes, and before or after each piece, bilingual emcees take to the stage to provide the audience with some cultural and historical context.

Mr. Gorczynski thought Shen Yun’s mission a worthy one, and wanted to wish the artists luck on their journey.

“Bringing it to the United States and touring the country with the eight different troupes is definitely a benefit to someone who grew up in the United States and wasn’t quite familiar with the culture. So being able to experience it was definitely informative,” he said.

The stories included universal and familiar themes like love and benevolence, and several touching moments for Mr. Gorczynski.

“I would say that I’ve learned that if you lead a good life as a human being, then I think that there’s a reward for you in the long run,” he said.

Also in the audience was Harold Allison, a physician, who also found the performance informative and an inspiring reflection.
“I thought it was very well orchestrated. The dancing was wonderful, and I really enjoyed the commentary at the side of the stage between acts. Overall, it was a wonderful, enlightening, and entertaining experience,” Mr. Allison said.

“I thought the messages were very good. It’s a reflection on life and the spirit of living, and really the evolution of one’s life over time. I found all of that very interesting,” he said. “It was enlightening. It reflected the spirit and, I guess, eternity.”

Mr. Allison said he was a repeat patron of Shen Yun and often recommends it.

“I came about two or three years ago. I tell everyone it’s a wonderful show and that they should experience it,” he said.
