HAMILTON, Ontario—Jane Vogel and her mother, Janine Ghesquiere, came to enjoy Shen Yun Performing Arts together on April 16.
“I thought it was beautiful. It was art, choreography, the performers, it was stunning music,” said Ms. Vogel, a financial tech owner.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“The history. There was a real lesson in this show. The history going back five millennium and just the strength of the people. So that was nice. It was nice to see,” Ms. Vogel said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. Using this art form, Shen Yun is able to vividly portray stories from the past and present-day China.

“It’s a great way of communicating in a beautiful way—a very strong message, an important message,” Ms. Vogel said.

Ms. Vogel was referring to the dance that told the story of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted for their faith in China.

Ms. Vogel shared that she saw, “the message that communism is scary and we see it creeping into the world all around us. And we just have to stay together.”

As a Christian, Ms. Vogel found that Shen Yun resonated with her.

“I’m a strong Christian, so I understand. I know that we’re going to a better place. So the ending of the show was beautiful, and I just pray for all the people that are still held under communism,” she said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.

“Oh my goodness, beautiful soprano, stunning!” Ms. Vogel praised.

Shen Yun’s live orchestra is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“I like the statement that the emcee said about music [as] a form of healing,” said Ms. Ghesquiere, who shared that she listened to quiet classical music every morning.

Ms. Ghesquiere also shared that she'd like to purchase a Shen Yun Symphony CD.
