SEVILLA, Spain—Antonio Muñoz, mayor of Sevilla, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Cartuja Center on March 8. He said Shen Yun was a different experience from other shows in his city: “The colorfulness, the music, the dance are different and therefore a pleasant surprise.”
Mayor Muñoz said elements of Shen Yun reminded him of his home. “There are elements that are familiar to me maybe because of the filmography that I like quite a lot, and there are certain films where, let’s say, that the movements have a certain similarity and it reminds me of that.
“And I also have to say that many times the choreography invites me to think about flamenco, which is our hallmark of Andalusia and Seville, of course.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by leading Chinese artists and quickly became the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture.
He agreed about the importance that traditional folkloric dance be recovered for future generations. “It is very important, any country, the Chinese, the Spanish. I think the reflection is valid for any country in the world that forgets its roots, that forgets its DNA, that forgets its history, is a country that will have no future.
“And therefore everything that is to recover the culture, to recover your sign of identity, seems to me almost an obligation in each of the countries.”
He said it’s important that everyone should see Shen Yun. “Of course it is. A way to approach, at least the people of Europe and Spain, is a way to approach a window, to know through the show an ancient culture, such as the Chinese.”
