VANCOUVER, Canada—The beauty and quality inherent in a Shen Yun performance always impresses, and for Heather Jurovich it was no different. The stay-at-home mom and several of her family members saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Jan. 24.
Ms. Jurovich was blown away.
“I’ve never seen anything like it, it was so beautiful! It was beautiful and the performers were spectacular. I don’t know how they did those moves. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was gorgeous,” she said after the show.
“The colours and the costumes—I wondered if the outfits were silk because they flowed so beautifully, they were perfect and everybody was so beautiful onstage. They were beautiful and perfect and I just want to learn to dance like that but I think I’m too old now,” she added, laughing.
With 5,000 years of continuous recorded history, Chinese culture is a treasure trove of stories. In its mission to revive the Middle Kingdom’s traditional culture, Shen Yun takes these stories and legends and presents them to audiences through live orchestral music and dance—classical Chinese dance in particular.
This art form that has been continually honed and refined over the ages highly impressed Ms. Jurovich.
“I thought it was just amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It was just so magical. It was lovely,” she said.
“I’ve never seen it before and I don’t know how they do those moves. I never knew that people can move like that and be so graceful, and do high-kicks and all the somersault tumbling. It was so impressive. Everybody should see it. They'd have such an appreciation for [Chinese] culture. They should bring it to schools.”
The wide array of colourful costumes—which are all originally designed and handmade—were also a big hit with her.
“They were just so gorgeous and flowing. And the fabric—I loved the fabric and the detail, and all the costume changes. They were always so different. Just something different all the time was coming on stage. Everything was just fast and beautiful and different, so always amazed. Every time the curtain came down and went up it was something different to see,” she said.
The magic for Ms. Jurovich began from when the curtain opened on the first piece, “Salvation and Renewal.”
“Just a big smile on my face, big smile and happy: ”Wow, this is going to be a great, great afternoon.' And we brought the whole family and the children, and my grandmother. Wonderful day for all of us. It was a special treat.”
