PORTLAND, Ore.—Surgeon Jose Fuentes has been trying for the last couple of years to attend Shen Yun Performing Arts. Finally, on March 16, while on a job assignment to Portland, he got his chance.

Sitting in the audience of the Keller Auditorium, Dr. Fuentes said the evening was wonderful.

“It’s amazing. The hard work that those dancers have been putting into the performance to show us how traditions in China have passed down through the last 5,000 years was amazing. It’s a good experience,” he expressed.

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. The artists’ mission is to bring back China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture that had been destroyed by decades of communist rule.

Prior to the regime’s spread of atheism, the teachings of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism were indelible parts of Chinese life. Shen Yun’s goal is to share with everyone the beauty of China before communism.

Shen Yun’s performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China.

Dr. Fuentes felt a connection to the divine through the programs.

“Through the dances, you can feel that connection to the spiritual, and it makes you realize, too, many things that are going on around the world,” he said.

“In the [good versus evil] scenes, it makes you realize that life is too short and you have to try to live in peace and harmony and be happy.”

He also really enjoyed Shen Yun’s live music.

“It felt like I was doing a meditation—was getting connected to myself and getting released, getting insulated from the outside world and listening to myself,” he stated. “It’s the kind of feeling that I’m [experiencing] today. It’s amazing. It’s really nice to be here.”

Referring to Shen Yun’s mission to bring back traditional Chinese culture and values despite severe persecution from the Chinese Communist Party, Dr. Fuente said he believes that “every single country or state has the right to express itself.”

“No matter what the situation is that you are living with, no matter if it’s hard or not, I think every single person has the right to express their feelings to the world,” he added.

“Sometimes people have their eyes closed, they don’t see what’s going on because they’re so worried about too many things—big things that are too hard to get, and they forget the small things in life that make you happy.”

He highly recommends everyone to come and see Shen Yun because “there’s so much to see and learn about Chinese culture. It’s really, really nice. Really amazing.”

“Before I came here today, I was talking to one of my co-workers and trying to recruit some [of them to come,] but they were so busy,” he explained. “But, of course, as soon as I go back to work on Monday, I’m going to recommend it to them. This show is amazing.”
