LOS ANGELES—Lynda and William McGee found Shen Yun Performing Arts to be a beautiful theater production when they had the opportunity to see the performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.

“That was beautiful,” said Mrs. McGee, a college counselor at Downtown Magnets High School. “I’ve been wanting to go for years. I’ve been telling my husband every time I see the commercials that I want to see it.”

New York-based Shen Yun—which can be translated as “the beauty of divine beings dancing”—is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company on a mission to revive China’s glorious 5,000-year-old culture through breathtaking music and dance.
Mrs. McGee really enjoyed Shen Yun’s costumes and dancing.

“I didn’t realize that there was so much crossover between ballet and Chinese dance,” she said.

“I like the music too—the orchestra and then the acrobatic dancing,” said Mr. McGee, director of electronic components at COMTECH TCS, Space Components & Antennas.

Mrs. McGee was pleasantly surprised by Shen Yun’s unique digital backdrop.

According to Shen Yun’s official website, its digital backdrops complement and synchronize all aspects of its performance: the characters, the colors of its costuming, its specific dance movements, the story being told, and in particular, the notes played by the orchestra and special audio effects.

The state-of-the-art graphics technology allows Shen Yun’s dancers to interact with an animated backdrop to transport the audience into magical, heavenly realms and bring stories to life.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Mrs. McGee said. “It was very different.”

And the many set changes in Shen Yun brought a wide array of visuals in the production.

“It made it very interesting that you could change the background and make it match with what’s going on in the story,” Mr. McGee added.

Mr. and Mrs. McGee, who bought tickets as their Christmas presents to each other, live in Los Angeles’ Chinatown.

“It’s nice to learn a little more about the culture that surrounds us every day,” Mrs. McGee said.

Shen Yun earns their recommendation.

“It was great,” Mr. McGee said. “It was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it.”

Mrs. McGee added, “We see so many ugly things surround us. To come to this and not have to think about that for a while, it’s a very beautiful thing.”
