NEW YORK—Watching Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, on Jan. 17, was an enriching cultural experience for Louis Doscain, Louis Basila, and Amgelik Chernov.

“Extremely colorful. It is beautifully done ... Very inventive,” said Mr. Doscain who is originally from Venice, Italy, and worked in the arts, specifically with paintings and sculptures by old European masters.

Shen Yun was founded in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.

“I love the ancient Chinese Culture. I don’t understand any of the modern culture, because I don’t follow it. But I like the ancient culture of China,” said Mr. Doscain.

Ms. Chernov said that she was glad she came to see the performance.

“I love it. I am so glad that I came. I feel like I’ve been into Chinese culture,” said Ms. Chernov, who is a student in finance originally from Russia.

Ms. Chernov said that she appreciated the colors and the movements in the performance.

Shen Yun’s brilliantly colored costumes have become a hallmark of the company.

Louise Basila, who works as a stock trader, said he enjoyed the animated backdrops used in the performance.

Shen Yun uses state-of-the-art graphics technology in its performances to create digital backdrops with animated settings. “The backdrops are magical windows to completely different realms. From vast open grasslands in one dance to the stately elegance of Tang Dynasty pavilions in another,” according to the Shen Yun website.

The backdrops are perfectly synchronized with all other elements of the performance, such as the costumes, props, the music and the dancing.

“I love the interaction of the [backdrop] and the stage,” said Mr. Basila.
