PORTLAND, Ore.—As a chiropractor—a profession that originates from traditional Chinese medicine—Dr. John Helton found a “free flow of that energy” and “symmetry” in Shen Yun Performing Arts at Portland’s Keller Auditorium on Jan. 18.
Dr. Helton, who owns Chiropractic Healing Hands For You, has been providing chiropractic healthcare and treatment for accident injuries for over 20 years. His work specializes in evaluations and treatment of injuries resulting from automobile accidents.
“Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” reads Shen Yun’s website. “Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired.”
That energy was certainly not lost upon Dr. Helton, who felt a very special affinity for Shen Yun’s message of humankind coming “to serve or be willing to endure ridicule or brutality to embrace the Fa—the Great Way,” he said.
Dr. Helton noted that the performance’s songs brought tears to his eyes, adding: “The lyrics were beautiful,” and how they were sung, “it was like transformational, it was really, really awesome.”
Shen Yun’s vocalists sing in the highly difficult bel canto technique. “Brimming with philosophical reflection about human life and containing deep layers of meaning, the texts go beyond the boundaries of nation, race, and culture, and have been fondly received and appreciated the world over,” reads Shen Yun’s website.
Speaking on what he described as a “divine symmetry,” Dr. Helton said that he was especially impressed by Shen Yun’s portrayal of tremendous courage amid the most trying circumstances, particularly under the current regime’s suppression of traditional values in China.
“So, I really salute the spirit of this,” he said. “That embraces freedom of each soul to come to be able to have the freedom to embrace the divine way.”
“Members of this cast have the courage to express that, and I’m very touched by all of the beauty,” he said.
