FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.—During his first time seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts, Dean Trantalis, mayor of the city of Fort Lauderdale, cherished the beauty and culture the performance brought to the city. Mr. Trantalis has been the city’s mayor since 2018, after his reelection in 2020.
“In terms of costume, dance, choreography … everything about it is magical,” said Mr. Tarntalis at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on March 22, “It just was an amazing experience!”
“Each program had its own allegory, a story to tell behind the dance and the singing. And I thought the stage production was amazing,” he said.
What captured the mayor’s attention most were the costumes and the element of dance-acting from each performer.
According to the company’s website, Shen Yun’s costumes and colors are true to traditional aesthetics and styles, painting each dance piece with the splendor of the past.
Mr. Tarntalis couldn’t say enough about how enamored he was by the expressions and performances of each individual dancer. The “smiling faces” of the artists and their enjoyment of their craft were his “favorite part of the show.”
“You could see how they enjoyed what they were doing,” he said, “It seems so seamless and so enjoyable that you kind of get wrapped up into the whole show simply because they’re having a good time, so you’re having a good time.”
“People are really impressed with the level of the quality of the performance,” he added, “whatever [the director’s] doing … they really got the right formula!”
“The technicality of the performances was definitely a 10 … you could see the amount of rehearsal, the amount of effort, the amount of commitment that each performer gave to this performance tonight. And to be able to continue to do this night after night across the nation, around the world, shows a lot of skill, a lot of dedication.”
“What we saw tonight was just an amazing performance … this was from a culture that we very rarely get to see here in our community,” he said, “the talent that [company] brought to our city was just simply unmatched.”“We’re very, very thankful that Shen Yun came to Fort Lauderdale,” he said, “we’re happy to have it here every year, year after year!”
“I'll come back next year,” he added.
