NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—The audience was enchanted by a performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the State Theatre New Jersey on March 30. Brian and Nancy Heitzenroeder enjoyed the show. Mr. Heitzenroeder, an  IT consultant, said it was his first time to see Shen Yun. “It’s a very entertaining show. It’s beautiful. The choreography and the music. It’s just incredible. The whole thing is just very entertaining,” he said.

Through classical Chinese dance and music, Shen Yun is sharing with the world the beauty of China’s authentic 5,000 years of history. Since its founding in 2006, the company has received worldwide accolades for its mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.
He was especially impressed by the stories presented in dance. “Very good moral stories.” There was a spiritual aspect, he said. “It’s enlightening. It’s bringing in a new culture to me, and a new religion, a way of thinking.”

Mrs. Heitzenroeder said: “I love the show. I love the dancing, the costumes. The music is just phenomenal. The singing is wonderful; the story is just very nice, wholesome stories that you are telling.”

She had positive feelings while watching the show and listening to the music: “I would say it’s awe, in awe of their dancing and their singing. Just the training that goes into what they do every day.”
The Heizenroeders said they would tell others if they had the chance to talk about Shen Yun: “It’s worth it. It’s definitely worth it. It’s just a fantastic experience,” said Mr. Heitzenroeder. Mrs. Heizenroeder echoed his sentiment, “It’s a good way to be entertained on a nice Saturday: to see some dancing, and some singing, and a wonderful story.”

They’ve Been Coming for Five Years and Recommend It to Everyone

Code enforcement officer David Leschot and his wife Elaine, a retired attorney, enjoyed many aspects of the Shen Yun performance. “I liked the athleticism as well as the graceful, the visual movement. Very beautiful,” said Mr. Leschot.

The dance with the flowers especially impressed the Leschots. “It was just very interesting the way they managed to make that work. It was very fun. It was very creative,” said Mr. Leschot.

Mr. Leschot described the spiritual message of the show, “The spiritual message from the show, I think, is to treat people well, and things will go well for you.”

He enjoyed this year, even though it was in a smaller theater: “From a production perspective, it is more challenging to be on the smaller stage, and it’s interesting to see how they’re handling it well. The show is still as good as when it’s on at the Metropolitan Opera or at the Opera House in Newark. I’ve seen them in Newark, Philadelphia, Manhattan.”

He said the performers have unique dancing skills. “The technical skills are 10 plus, off the chart. Really good, yes. It would be hard to give them a rating. I think the traditional Chinese dance is very, very athletic, very challenging,” he said.

The Leschots have been coming to Shen Yun for five years in various cities throughout the East Coast. He said he always recommends people see Shen Yun: “I always recommend people to come to the show, especially if you enjoy dance. If you’re someone who’s a fan of European dance, you will enjoy this as well.”
With shows scheduled in over 200 cities and across five continents, the 2024 touring season is shaping up to be the artists’ busiest yet.
