DENVER—Filmmaker Sol Ortiz is no stranger to live performances, but when he attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening show at the Buell Theatre on April 5, he was left stunned by its breathtaking beauty.

“It’s a great performance, just incredible,” he exclaimed. “The animation, the dance, the coordination—everything is great.”

Founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who fled persecution, the New York-based Shen Yun is dedicated to reviving the beauty and virtues of pre-communist China.
The performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Mr. Ortiz loved “the different stories of the different regions.”

He was especially impressed by the story-based dance depicting the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Dafa—a peaceful meditation whose followers adhere to the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.

He was deeply moved by the practitioners’ willingness to sacrifice their lives rather than abandon their beliefs.

“The story of Falun Dafa and the persecution, that’s very important,” he said. “It’s important to see the other side of China that other people don’t see. So, that’s why I wanted to see [Shen Yun.]”

A spiritual person, Mr. Ortiz really appreciated the artists’ efforts to promote China’s 5,000-year divinely inspired culture.

“The whole story is just incredible—how we’re all divine [and] brought here [on Earth]. We need to remember our roots versus the modern life,” he explained.

“That’s important—to see the tradition, to hold on to tradition—and China has thousands of years of tradition.”

He also loved Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which seamlessly blended traditional Western orchestration with solo Chinese folk instruments such as the two-stringed erhu and the pipa—an ancient Chinese lute.

“It’s very healing. … It’s incredible. Being seated next to the orchestra is great. The composers—everything is just in sync. It’s great. I love it,” he said.

Mr. Ortix will for sure be recommending Shen Yun performance to his friends and family.

“I would definitely recommend it. I kind of came by myself just to see what it was like and then [I’ll] definitely recommend it to other friends, for sure.”
