LAUSANNE, Switzerland—From Jan. 14 to 17, the city of Lausanne resounded with the sounds of ancient China as the Shen Yun Performing Arts returned to Europe for a new season.
Mauro Zanazzi spoke from the heart, with an authenticity that he probably also serves with love in his Italian specialty restaurant in Payerne, not far from Lausanne. Traditional dishes from his native Italy, bringing traditional culture to life with a restaurant named in homage to his mother. Perhaps that’s why this restaurant owner passionately understood Shen Yun’s mission.

“What they do, the singing, the dancing ... with such love! It’s incredible,” said Mauro Zanazzi, visibly happy and moved.

He said he was convinced the artists of New York-based Shen Yun perform “with a desire to share what they think, and the Chinese tradition with such a strength of soul and love, that we should imitate them.”

“Everyone, all young people should imitate them to transmit the traditions of each people to the whole world,” he said.

Via the performance, Mr. Zanazzi “felt the desire and the strength that they transmit with the movements, the dances, and the music too.”

According to Mr. Zanazzi, “the perfection of the movements and the dance” of Shen Yun came from their “desire to transmit 5,000 years of history.”

“I had tears in my eyes because it is a really beautiful emotion!” he said.

“They are young people ... they are young people who do all this, and the love that they use, that they have to do this, the strength! And always with a high level of professionalism, because they did not learn to do this only yesterday.”

“It is sure that those who taught all this to these young people, learned it from the masters before them ... from the ancestors who passed it on to them, it’s beautiful,” Mr. Zanazzi said.

Classical Chinese dance indeed has a long history, drawing its techniques and movements from several thousand years of culture, enriching itself from the various past dynasties, to become today one of the most complete dance systems in the world.

“That’s what I’m thinking about ... Not only should China do it in the world, but every country in the world should pass on and make their traditions known, everything that’s important ... and not forget what the ancestors did to get to this point,” said Mr. Zanazzi.

“It’s really unique and for me it’s the first time... unique in the world I think! You really have to appreciate it. It’s a show that you absolutely have to see!”
