BERLIN, Germany—Shen Yun Performing Arts has introduced authentic Chinese music to audiences in Germany, where music is a large part of the national culture.

“The precision of the coordination between the stage, the projection technology, the choreography, and the music was incredible,” said Christian Fitzner after the last performance of  Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 21 at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz.

Mr. Fitzner is an orchestra conductor, and he came to see Shen Yun with his wife, Julia Graeber. He was surprised to find a live orchestra accompanying the dancers.

“At first, I didn’t realize it was playing live. I thought the music was a recording because it’s very difficult to find the exact tempo for the dancers. They play very, very precisely,” said Mr. Fitzner.

Shen Yun is based in New York and its orchestra features traditional Chinese instruments such as the pipa and erhu within a classic Western ensemble.

Mr. Fitzner expressed his joy in seeing and hearing the erhu soloist.

“It was very expressive. With two strings and a bow, she expressed a lot—and it was very clean,” he said.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. With that culture, there was a reminder of traditional values and the importance of maintaining morality.
“A good message is important these days, very important, and it wasn’t overly done. The criticism of today’s Chinese state and politics was very clear. And that’s good,” Mr. Fitzer said.

‘You Have to See It Once in Your Life’

Piotr Stola and his wife Anna traveled to Berlin from Poland to see Shen Yun and were not disappointed. Mr. Stola is a programmer and runs several companies.

“It was very impressive and amazing! The CGI effects, coupled with the traditional dance, were fantastic. This is really something new. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I think it was a spectacle, especially for young people,” said Mr. Stola.

Shen Yun’s website says the digital backdrop “creates seamless interaction between projection and performers on stage—an invention so original it has its own patent.”

“The screen effects are very detailed and carefully planned and completely in sync with the dancers. It’s really amazing, and it worked very well—it was really wonderful, a great performance,” remarked Mr. Stola.

Shen Yun’s dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“It was beautiful, the dances were beautiful, the dancers were beautiful. You have to see it once in your life,” said Ms. Stola

After missing Shen Yun in Poland, Ms. Stola was ecstatic to get to see Shen Yun in Germany.
“I think it’s important to get to know Chinese culture. I love Chinese theater and classical music. The live music was great,” she said.
