TORONTO—The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts was filled with an expectant crowd, and they were not disappointed with the all-new season of Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 2.

Retired professor Don Fishley and his wife came to enjoy the performance. “It’s absolutely wonderful,” Mr. Fishley said. “The costumes, the stage, the backdrops, everything is absolutely amazing. We’ve been wanting to come into it for a long time and today was the first day we were able to.  And we’re just absolutely enjoying it.”

He was impressed with Shen Yun’s animated backdrop, which has performers jump into different worlds and fly into the sky.

He liked “how [the backdrop] transforms the people on the stage into the screen. They find they’re there and then they come back onto the stage again. I think that was the most appealing thing so far. It’s been excellent.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese traditional culture before communism. Mr. Fishley approved of the efforts Shen Yun makes as they tour around the world.

“I think it’s bringing it across. We read up on it ahead of time to find out what it was all about and so we knew about that. I think it’s been presented excellently like that,” he said.

He commented on how Canada has changed as China has changed after communism.

“Well. Before communism, I think it was similar to what we are here in Canada. But then, communism took over, and there are so many restrictions nowadays. Hopefully they get out of that, and get some freedom back again soon,” he said.

China, before communism, carried deep spiritual traditions, and Mr. Fishley approved. “The spirituality? I think that it’s been extremely well presented in the show here. I think that it’s done very, very well with it. It’s great. It brings a kind of Christian and Chinese faith together and brings both out in the public like that. It’s very well put together.”
Shen Yun features a live orchestra with Eastern and Western instruments and singers who sing in Mandarin. The lyrics are projected in English on the backscreen.

Mr. Fishley said the music “is absolutely amazing. Wonderful. The opera singer—she was amazing. I’m really enjoying it.”

He enjoyed the entire production, including hosts on stage who provide introductions to the dances in both English and Chinese. “The costumes, the stage, the backdrops. ... There’s nothing bad to say about the show. It’s all good. That’s wonderful.

“The narrators are both excellent, and it’s nice to have it in the two different [languages] as well. It’s just so well put together. I think it’s an amazing performance. It should be something everybody plans on seeing one day,” he said.
