NEW YORK—Penny Kachurin, a former ballet dancer, thought that the technique in Shen Yun Performing Arts’ final show at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on April 28, “was incredible.”

“It was a wonderful performance,” said Ms. Kachurin. “The colors were magnificent. The technique was incredible. I had a wonderful time.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired culture through “breathtaking music and dance,” the company’s website states. Shen Yun was founded in 2007, and has three equally large companies touring the world simultaneously.

Ms. Kachurin particularly enjoyed Shen Yun’s animated backdrops.

“All of a sudden they flew forward and then they were on the stage, and then they disappeared,” said Ms. Kachurin, referring to the way Shen Yun’s dancers appear to seamlessly transition from the stage into the animated backdrop. “It was really very, very charming.”

Shen Yun uses animated backdrops to extend the stage and transport audiences to “a world where heaven and earth are one,” the company’s website states.

“This is something that I’ve been wanting to see,” said Ms. Kachurin. “It gives you a nice insight into lots of things that I wasn’t aware of.”

Shen Yun presents traditional Chinese culture which has been nearly destroyed by the Chinese Communist Party in mainland China. “The Chinese Communist Party removes the cultural essence of respect for the divine, thereby extracting the heart and soul of traditional Chinese culture. Shen Yun seeks to revive these virtues the world over,” the company’s website states.

“It amazes me how flexible the men are, because that’s unusual for the male body,” said Ms. Kachurin. “The women, their extensions were just mind-boggling.”
