NEW YORK—The acclaimed Shen Yun Performing Arts won high praise from a former ballerina who attended Saturday evening’s performance at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.

“Perfect technique,” said Valentina McHan, a former professional ballerina with the Moscow ballet, who later switched to folk dancing.

“I am just so amazed at how professional and well done this performance is,” she said. Many a Broadway show could learn from Shen Yun, she added.

The synchronization in the dances in Shen Yun was “finger by finger together,” said Ms. McHan.

Based in New York, Shen Yun presents classical Chinese dance, along with ethnic and folk dance and story-based dance, accompanied by an orchestra that combines both classical Western and Chinese instruments.

Ms. McHan said that having grown up with Russian ballet technique she knows “the sweat, the repetition, and the love for the performance” it takes to achieve such high quality.

Shen Yun performances present China’s rich, traditional culture. Ms. McHan said Shen Yun’s performance “shows how people live and what they believe.”

Furthermore, Ms. McHan said that she wants to learn from China’s 5,000 year-old culture. “Russia is younger,” she said. “America is too young, so we need to learn from [traditional Chinese culture].”

Traditional Chinese culture has “good etiquette, good manners, respect for elders, and respect for even the young generations,” said Ms. McHan.
