PORTLAND, Ore.—Each year, Shen Yun travels the globe, imparting the breadth and divine harmony of traditional Chinese culture through music and dance.

At its fourth 2014 performance at Portland’s Keller Auditorium, Jim Ponti, a retired art teacher, found Shen Yun’s grand display to fully encompass the entire spectrum of true artistic endeavor.

“I think it’s fabulous,” he said at the Jan. 19 matinee. “I love the color, and the fluidity of the dance and the dancers.”

Through China’s rich dynastic history, classical Chinese dance has absorbed the best of each era. Rich with profound wisdom and deep inner meaning, it has become a complete system of dance that embodies traditional aesthetic principles with its unique dance movements and rhythms.

Mr. Ponti, who taught drawing, painting, and photography, felt a sincere appreciation for Shen Yun’s well-rounded assortment of artistic repertoire. From the music to its arrangement of color and its digital technology, the performance was on the mark in every regard.

“The color to me is spectacular,” he said. “The way that the dancers have coordinated the dance with the technology of the background, it’s just fabulous and it goes so quickly—very fast-paced, very energetic.”

As for his favorite part: “Yes, all of it,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it very much.”
