NEW YORK—Fashion designer Gladys Bagley experienced Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on April 28.
“I don’t like the show, I love the show,” she said. “It is so beautiful. It takes you on a journey throughout all the history and provinces of China. It’s incredible and a real experience.”
New York-based Shen Yun transports audiences through time—the different eras and dynasties throughout Chinese history—and space—across the vast land of China and up into the heavens—during its performance. The company was formed in 2006 to revive the ancient culture, which goes back 5,000 years.
Ms. Bagley was pleased with the cultural revival.
“I think it’s a wonderful thing to show the Chinese culture to as many people, and because Lincoln Center gets so many different kinds of people and tourists, it’s a wonderful place,” she said.
The performance as a whole pleased and impressed her.
“The costumes, the make up, the choreography, the scenery, the level of professionalism is superb,” she said.
One of the draws of Shen Yun is the handmade costumes that adorn the dancers. Ms. Bagley will very possibly draw inspiration for new trends from Shen Yun.
“This is like a feast for the eyes, ears,” she said. “It’s just beautiful.”
The ancient Chinese culture is replete with a wide range of virtues and values such as a respect for the heavens and divine retribution, as well as benevolence, wisdom, and honor, according to Shen Yun’s website. The Chinese culture is thought to have been handed down from the divine through various dynasties, transmitting a rich and abundant culture to the Chinese people.
Ms. Bagley expressed support for traditional Chinese culture and the presentation of it through Shen Yun.
“The values are wonderful—the values about how life should be looked at,” she said. “That’s very beautiful.”
