OKLAHOMA CITY—The audience was abuzz for a spectacular performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the OCCC Visual and Performing Arts Center Theater on Feb. 23.

Wailee Kwan, Miguel Santana, her mother, and the couple’s son have been delighted to see Shen Yun several times. “This is our fourth time watching the show,” Ms. Kwan said. “We started watching it in Washington state and this is our third time here in Oklahoma City.”

“We bring our son particularly because he loves Shen Yun,” Ms. Kwan, who teaches in a Catholic school, said.
Shen Yun’s mission is the revive China’s traditional divinely-inspired culture from “China before Communism” and a deeper message of belief and spirituality that Ms. Kwan appreciated.

“Magnificent, amazing, wonderful, impressive, breathtaking,” she said.

“We also like the message that it has and we’re Catholic. But we have the same belief that you have—to act with kindness and with respect, and we have to maintain tradition, you have to seek the truth. And when you act in that way, then you will be able to go to heaven,” Ms. Kwan said.

Mr. Santana said, “For me, those things are important: kindness, how do you treat people no matter what your differences,” he said, referring to the story of a man who was ousted by the communist regime. He then found Falun Gong practitioners, who are persecuted by the regime, and began to practice spiritual cultivation with them.

“The followers of faith picked him up and said, ‘Okay, you can come with us no matter what your beliefs are, no matter what you thought before, we always have open arms and embrace you for who you are.’

“And that’s something ... that no matter what anybody believes, no matter what you think, what you believe, what you are involved with, we are here to help you. We’re here to embrace you. And that kindness, I think, is phenomenal,” Mr. Santana said.

“The same [communist] regime that took the eyes out of the gentleman in the presentation, he was able to be reborn, in a sense, and he forgave those people,” he said.

Mr. Santana, an engineer in the Air Force, was amazed at the dancer’s harmony and precision. He said, “The show is fantastic. I like the synchronization, how they all synchronize.”

He said that Shen Yun’s performers must train for years to reach this level of performance.

“The hours you have to spend there, I’m always looking at it from that point of view. The training that he gets to make a performance like this, it has to be incredible. Incredible,” he said.

“I like the history,” Mr. Santana added. “I like how you use in this artistic performance the history. It’s fantastic. I like that part a lot.”

Matt and Marcia Thompson attended their first Shen Yun performance with their children Charlie and River Kahler. Mr. Thomson, an owner of an insurance business, gave his enthusiastic opinion.

“Oh, beautiful. The colors are absolutely gorgeous. The dance is unbelievable. Precise, very talented. Choreography, excellent. I always wanted to come. And finally, we made it, and I brought my two kids. Really, really nice show,” he said.

“It’s amazing,” Mrs. Thompson, who works in government, said. “I think the precision is [incredible]. You can’t notice the faces but it’s just unique.”

Ms. Kahler noted how polished the production was. “I think it’s very pretty. It’s perfect, perfection. Everyone is so precise. The colors are pretty. I like all of it. And the stories,” she said.
Shen Yun’s mission is to revive China’s divinely inspired traditional culture of 5,000 years and bring to the world its stories, legends, and art through dance and music.
“It shows that what I’ve learned from watching the first part of the show is that they do have a strong faith in their freedom and their religion,” Mr. Thompson said. The production shows how the performers are “free to express themselves and push back against tyranny. I really like that part of it.”

To recommend Shen Yun to friends and family, Mr. Thompson would say: “If you get a chance, you should go see it.”
