NEW YORK CITY—Alexander and Josephine Demoura saw in Shen Yun Performing Arts a reminder of what China used to be. Indeed, the New York-based company’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and dance, showing audiences China before communism.

“I thought it was a wonderful performance. It was very visual, interactive. The dancing was superb. I’m really enjoying the show very much,” said Mrs. Demoura after seeing the April 10 performance. “The music is wonderful. Beautiful. The orchestra is amazing. Top notch.”

“Beautiful choreography, amazing colors, costumes. As you said, music. Everything comes together perfectly,” said Mr. Demoura, a surgeon, agreeing with his wife.

What stood out to the Demouras as a “remembrance of what China used to be like” was the divinely inspired traditional Chinese culture

“I like the theme of heavenly beings coming to earth and bringing enlightenment to earth,” Mr. Demoura said. There were references to and depictions of heavenly realms, divine beings, and meditation, he shared, and he felt it “absolutely” relevant.

“It’s very important, right? The world is missing that,” he said.

Mrs. Demoura added that she wanted so much to thank the performers.

“Thank you for your interpretation of what’s going on. Just for the messages that you bring to us,” she said. “They’re doing a great job depicting what’s really going on.”

Actor Angel Rosa also wanted to express his admiration for the Shen Yun artists, impressed with their dedication to their craft and mission.

“I know how hard it is to prepare. There’s a lot of preparation here. Amazing preparation and dedication,” he said. “That’s so beautiful. And when you have dedication, you have beautiful work. And it tells.”

“They’re amazing. The dancers are amazing. Keep up the beautiful work,” he said. “Thank you for being here. Thank you for allowing us to see this and enjoy it.”

Mr. Rosa hoped that the people in China could see Shen Yun as well, “and learn from it. And just get back to the beauty of it. Bring back this beautiful culture in China. That would be beautiful.”

He was shocked to learn that something as beautiful as Shen Yun was banned in China today, which is under the rule of the communist regime. Mr. Rosa said he, his wife, and his 8-year-old daughter were seeing the performance for the first time that evening and loved it.

“This is amazing, this is so beautiful. I can’t believe it’s not allowed in China. I can’t believe that. It’s amazing. We’re enjoying it, thank God,” he said.

The performance included some very moving stories, he added, with themes like redemption, perseverance, and overcoming.

“If it’s in your heart to get something, you do it. You go get it no matter what,” he said.
