CLAREMONT, Calif.—For the seventh year in a row, Sergio and Rosie Noriega came to watch Shen Yun Performing Arts, this time at Bridges Auditorium on the afternoon of March 29.

The world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture and highlight its history before communist rule.

“Every year is amazing and every year is something different,” said Ms. Noriega. “I love it ... all the dances and the dress, the colors, the moves, everything.”

Founded in 2006 in New York, Shen Yun now has eight companies touring the globe simultaneously, with an all-new production presented to the audience every year.

“We enjoy everything about this show, so that’s why we come here,” said Mr. Noriega. “We try to be here every year.”

Classical Chinese dance has a rich history, part of the thousands-year-old culture that is believed to be “divinely inspired.” It serves as the foundation of Shen Yun Performing Arts, along with ethnic and folk dances, story-based dances, and musical solo performances.

Ms. Noriega said she was impressed by the dancers’ flexibility and their chemistry together on stage.

“Fantastic form, the techniques and everything,” she said. “I know every movement [has] meaning, so it’s very precise. They’re very together ... it’s amazing.”

She said the first time she saw Shen Yun’s unique patented interaction between the dancers and the digitally projected backdrop behind them, she was astonished.

“I was like ... how do they do that?” she said. “It’s amazing. We love it.”

The technology transforms the performance and allows the dancers to travel back and forth between the stage and the animated background, according to the company.

The couple also said one of their favorite things about the performance is the message it shares with the audience.

“The strength, the courage that you need to have, to speak up, to be loyal,” Ms. Noriega said. “Don’t forget where you came from and where your beliefs are. That’s very important. Family is very important also.”

She said other virtues demonstrated by Shen Yun performers include having faith, being polite, and taking care of one’s family.

“It’s a very strong message, and I think especially for all our youngsters ... we should relay the message to them as well,” she said. “It’s very emotional.”

Ms. Noriega also said the full message of Shen Yun is unexplainable and encouraged others to see the performance and experience it for themselves.

“You have to see it. You have to come and see it in order for you to understand how we feel about it,” she said.
