LONDON—Spencer and Sharon Phillips thoroughly enjoyed a performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at Eventim Apollo in London on Jan. 7.

Dr. Phillips said, “We both like it very much.”

Mrs. Phillips agreed. “It’s stunning. The costumes are beautiful. The synchronization of the dancing is amazing— Really enjoying it.”

The Phillips were impressed with the performance as soon as the curtain opened, with the first scene depicting the Creator coming down to create Chinese civilization.

Dr. Phillips said, “I like the way the screen is interacting with the dance.”

“It is very creative, very creative. It’s just so colorful, as well,” Mrs. Phillips said.

Presenting a brand-new set of dance pieces, musical compositions, and solo performances each season, the company takes its audience on a journey through time and space to rediscover the beauty and traditional values of pre-communist China. Shen Yun is banned from touring China by the communist authorities.
“What [Shen Yun] does, it reflects the past cultural history of China,“ Dr. Phillips said. ”It is tragic that this is being repressed by the Chinese government. It’s a disgrace, actually.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture, and Dr. Phillips agreed.

“You can’t crush people’s culture. No, you can’t do it,” he said.

Mrs. Phillips loved the orchestra and its calming music.

“Even if the music was just on its own and there wasn’t anything going on on the stage, it’s so relaxing to listen to, and it’s very melodic,” Mrs. Phillips said.

“It’s the sort of thing you just close your eyes to, and you could just sit in your own home and listen to that. Beautiful!”

Asked if they would recommend Shen Yun to friends and family, Dr. Phillips said, “Yes!”

Mrs. Phillips agreed. “Definitely, definitely. We’ve come all the way from North London. We’ve come quite a ways tonight. It is worth it. It is worth it!”
